Veterans Treatment Court
Waukesha County has one of the largest veteran populations in Wisconsin, yet it lacks a Veterans Treatment Court (VTC). As a veteran, former judge, and candidate for Waukesha County Circuit Court, I believe it’s time to change that.
Veterans Treatment Courts divert eligible veterans from the traditional criminal justice system and use evidence-based practices to treat and rehabilitate those struggling with alcohol, drug, or mental health conditions. These courts improve public safety, reduce recidivism, and help veterans regain stability and purpose in their lives. Over half of Wisconsin counties have established VTCs. It’s time for Waukesha County to do the same to support the more than 19,000 veterans who call it home.
VTCs are effective because they leverage veterans’ familiarity with discipline and structure and because they recognize the trauma many veterans experience. Through a combination of incentives, sanctions, and comprehensive support services, these courts provide addiction treatment, mental health care, stable housing, and employment assistance. They also help veterans access the VA benefits they’ve earned, such as medical care and career development opportunities.
Waukesha County veterans who become involved in the criminal court system deserve this chance. The trauma associated with military service is undeniable, with veterans facing high rates of PTSD, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. Tragically, they are almost twice as likely as the general population to die by suicide. By establishing a VTC, we can help our veterans rebuild their lives while also enhancing public safety and strengthening our community.
I am running for Waukesha County Circuit Court because we need a judge who is a veteran and understands the importance of creating a Veterans Treatment Court. These veterans deserve our support.
